As the name leads you to believe, this theater goes where the other stages don't dare. The facility is particularly interesting, as it is housed in a restored and converted church. The productions are usually the creative and energetic efforts of Edinburgh University theater students.

Thanks to the huge number of festivals and performances that come to Edinburgh each summer, there are plenty of venues in the area. This is one of the largest, hosting performances such as opera, orchestra concerts, and theater. Recent shows include an opera version of "Hamlet," Richard Strauss' opera "Salome," and a concert performance of the works of Vivaldi, Mozart and Haydn. Comedians and popular musicians show up here, as well.

The King's Theatre has a historic feel, and though the facility is in need of refurbishment, the productions are always of the highest caliber. Recent shows included Anthony Burgess' version of "A Clockwork Orange" and Oscar Wilde's "Lady Windermere's Fan."

Netherbow Theater is small and intimate, making it a dramatic place to see live modern drama and dance. The children's program is extensive, with a regular schedule of storytellers making appearances.

This theater has its own company that puts on high quality productions of modern plays, many by regional playwrights. Just across from Festival Square, many ballet performances and children's shows are featured here.
